As it is mental health awareness month, I thought I would share with you “My reason why”. The reason I get up in the morning, the reason I try to be the best person I can, the reason I keep on going….
In life, especially when it comes to our career, we get wrapped up in everyday tasks, everyday pressure and very rarely take a step back to reflect on ourselves and take a breather. The only time we do take a breather is when it all gets too much and sometimes it can be difficult to take that deep breath. It is important to take that time out, take that deep breath and focus on something that keeps you going. What is your reason for waking up in a morning? What is your reason why?
This is my reason why….
Meet Hurricane Speed, AKA Charlie. Charlie is a 3-year-old Thoroughbred Gelding who I bought earlier on this year straight off the racing track. Charlie raced 5 times but unfortunately didn’t quite “cut the mustard” so I bought him aiming to give him a new focus in life and also to provide me with a focus.
I have owned horses all my life and I genuinely owe my life to them. Horses are incredible creatures as they mirror and respond to human behaviour. Being herd animals, they rely on sensory data to sense danger or safety. A horse will pick up on every emotion humans give out. Even if we think we are not giving out emotional signals, if our subconscious mind is, then the horse will pick up on it. Horses have been used in studies to reduce anxiety, depression and stress. Every day, there is no better feeling than taking that step back from reality, breathing in their smell, listening to their heartbeat and watching them mirror your behaviour.
I gave Charlie another chance in life and everyday he also gives me a chance. A chance to be a better person, a chance to reflect on my actions and a chance to succeed!
So, if you are feeling like life is getting a little too much. Take a step back and focus on your reason why… It could be your family, an animal, a hobby or just anything you enjoy. Everyone in life should take at least an hour out of their day to focus their mind on what is important to them. Your mental health is a priority, your happiness is essential, and your self-care is a necessity.
