So, with it being National Apprenticeship Week, I thought it would be good to provide an insight and share my experience so far with an apprenticeship I am personally carrying out.
After a successful first year with TMR Group last year, I was given the opportunity to develop and build my own team. Although I have worked within the recruitment industry for 7 years, I have only ever had to manage myself so the thought of managing a team was exciting but filled me with worry. What if I get it wrong? What if they don’t learn anything from me? What if I become a dreaded micro-manager? How do I write a budget? How do I carry out 121 reviews? The list went on…
I am always up for a challenge and I was extremely determined to succeed in the opportunity presented in front of me! Jo and Andy very kindly asked if I wanted to complete an apprenticeship to support my learning and development within a management position. I jumped at the chance!
I love learning, I always want to better myself and I want to be the best I can possibly be, so I enrolled in a Level 5 in Leadership & Management.
It hasn’t been an easy transition. Trying to balance managing my own desk, managing a team and completing an apprenticeship is extremely time-consuming however it has hugely benefitted me and I am only a few months in. I have learnt more than I could ever have imagined, my tutor really takes the time out to make sure that we are not only the right path to pass our apprenticeship but also provides us with real-life coaching, managing and leading support for my team.
Practises I have put into the work-place and have seen great results from. Andy G joined my team in January and is already well on his way to being a successful consultant. I still have a long way to go but my apprenticeship has really benefitted the approach I take when managing people.
Personal development is also an important factor within my apprenticeship. Those who know me well will know that I probably don’t believe in my ability as much as I should. I’ve had a successful career within recruitment so far and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I wasn’t any good at it, however, my self-esteem has always been low, even outside of work. So as part of my apprenticeship, I am also partaking in confidence & self-esteem coaching to assist with my personal development and I am well on my way to a more positive mentality!
If an apprenticeship is offered to you, or you are currently considering carrying out an apprenticeship then do not even hesitate! Just go for it! What I have learnt so far has been invaluable, and I am truly looking forward to continuing with my journey!
